Natural Building

We aim to apply old-world artisan techniques and pure natural materials to create spaces and buildings that we ourselves would like to occupy. We believe in the inherent beauty of good materials and focus on clean minimalistic design. We are inspired by spaces that breathe, yet stand strong and beautiful for millennia; where structure is formed from materials that are non-toxic to the environment, the builders, and ultimately the dwellers of the space. Certain building materials have been found to actually improve ones wellness by occupying such a space, moonwood for one, and we have discovered that the cleanest methods are actually quite low tech and have been practiced successfully since antiquity.

Materials are everything. This is why we have selected the following two natural building materials as our primary offerings. Our buildings intend to provide shelter from the elements and offer indoor spaces that promote health in mind and body; they should be moisture-stable, free of mold, rot-resistant and deter pests, and should not only insulate us from the the cold, but also provide insulation from environmental pollutants including electromagnetic frequencies. These two materials not only achieve these objectives but they do so naturally, with superior performance.

Hempcrete

A lightweight mixture of lime and the woody pulp core of the hemp plant as the insulating mass-wall of the building envelope. It has a negative carbon footprint.

Moonwood

Wood regeneratively harvested according to folk traditions during the waning cycle of the winter moon which gives it superior properties for construction, fine instruments, and health.

These core building systems are beautifully complimented by any of the following:

  • Natural plasters

  • Tadalakt

  • Earthen floors

  • Natural stone and masonry

  • Glass and ironworks

  • Solid wood finished surfaces
